Juan A. Cruz’s “Mini Retrospective of the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s”, takes a look at the artist’s
journeys to Spain, Mexico, Central America and Cuba. The works reflect his search for his
past and an understanding of where tribal and modern worlds meet.
“I am constantly discovering new images and seeing new visions. These images reveal
themselves to me, and speak to my inner self. I try to give these images life and meaning.
Juan A. Cruz is the artist in residence of the Near West Side Initiative, an urban revitalization
program in the Near Westside neighborhood in Syracuse. Juan A. Cruz lives and works in his
“Patch-Up Studio” hoping to provide a community place for children and adults to learn art.
“I got in trouble when I was a kid. I figure if I help kids develop their own talent or discover
their own talent. I could help guide them out of trouble.”
Cruz’s work has shown extensively in Upstate New York, California, and Puerto Rico and
some are now in the collections of the Everson Museum of Art, the Gifford Foundation, and
the Cayuga Museum of History and Art in Upstate New York .
